Our Tenets

Through SSFHS, we, the Sisters and our coworkers minister in a Catholic health-care system which upholds the moral values of the Catholic Church.

This corporate ministry has the following central concerns: compassion for those in need, respect for life and the dignity of persons, wellness and the prevention of illness, restoration to health, and the acceptance of death as the final step toward wholeness.

Committed to this mission, we provide professional health care, exercise careful stewardship of resources, and witness Christ’s love to all whom we serve.  We hold the following tenets:

We believe in the dignity, uniqueness, and worth of each individual and their God-given rights and in the value of the family as an essential unit of society.  Within the limits of our resources, we offer our health services to all regardless of race, creed, color or financial status.

We believe that the purpose of our healthcare facilities is to respect life and to preserve health as well as treat illness and injury.

We believe that we must demonstrate a high regard for the sanctity of human life.  This belief includes: protecting the rights of all patients, recognizing and safeguarding the life of the newborn, guarding against the premature termination of life, as well as the extraordinary and unnatural prolongation of life, and providing for the spiritual needs of the patient through spiritual care programs.

We believe that our purposes and objectives can best be achieved through a formal organization of sound management, which upholds the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare and other moral directives of the Catholic Church given for Catholic healthcare facilities.

We believe that the board of trustees has the responsibility for the healthcare institutions and the appointment of qualified administrative personnel to manage them.

We believe in the importance of upholding the practice of good medicine by accepting for membership on the medical staffs only those qualified and conscientious physicians who will be guided by the medical staff bylaws approved by the board of directors and by this philosophy.

We believe that excellence in the operation of our healthcare institutions can be maintained by the proper selection, utilization, and evaluation of all who serve within the institution.  We further believe that all should maintain a high degree of competence and accountability while providing compassionate care and promoting Christian community.

We believe in the dignity and worth of our coworkers and recognize their just rights regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin.

We believe that our public trust to the civic community is best fulfilled through dialogue and cooperation with the diocese, appropriate health agencies, associations, and institutions in matters dealing with health care.
