The hospitals and laboratories of the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, Inc. (SSFHS), offer a variety of anatomic pathology employment and training opportunities. In our Anatomical Pathology Department, physician pathologists work together with cytology and histology technologists to diagnose cancer and other disease in tissue and body fluid samples. As with all other careers in our organization, SSFHS offers not only professional development opportunities, but also an opportunity for personal commitment and service to others. Our focus on compassionate care, our commitment to the ongoing ministry of healing, and our Franciscan values, all make anatomical pathology at SSFHS a special and rewarding career.
Cytology
Cytology technologists examine human cell samples under the microscope looking for early signs of cancer and other diseases. The gynecological PAP smear is the most frequently examined cell sample. Cytology assistants prepare these cell samples for examination by organizing and processing each specimen and then staining the associated arranged slide. The cytology staff works closely with pathologists to ensure the highest level of patient care and client services in an atmosphere of teamwork and professional growth.
Cytology assistants are also needed and will be trained on the job. Ideal candidates for this position are those who possess some mechanical abilities and fine motor skills, are attentive to detail and can assess the characteristics of color.
Histology
Histology technologists and technicians are responsible for preparing specimens for gross analysis, embedding and processing tissue specimens, cutting sections and preparing microscopic slides and performing routine and special stains. The histology staff works with the management team and pathologists to provide quality care to the patients and clients we serve.
If your personal philosophy fits with our view of health care and you would like further information on how you, as a professional in Anatomic Pathology, can become part of the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services team, please contact us.
