Letter to the Community

Traditions and Transitions

Throughout 2008, St. Elizabeth Regional Health employees, physicians and volunteers – as well as community members – have been looking forward to the opening of St. Elizabeth East. This state-of-the-art hospital is the culmination of years of research and planning.

As we prepare for the opening of St. Elizabeth East, many of us have been reflecting on the various traditions at St. Elizabeth and Home Hospital.

St. Elizabeth traces its roots back to 1875, when six Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration arrived in Lafayette from Germany to open a hospital. Within a few days, they received the support of the community in this endeavor. Home Hospital traces its heritage back to 1869 in Lafayette and also received gracious support from the community. The merging of these two hospital in the late 1990s brought together two excellent facilities to provide compassionate, comprehensive and exceptional quality health care to patients and their families in our community.

We are grateful to those early visionaries and community benefactors who have done so much for St. Elizabeth and Home Hospital throughout the years. Those individuals range from hospital employees and physicians who advocated for advanced care to Auxiliary members and volunteers who raised funds for various projects to community members who entrusted us with providing quality health care throughout the years.

We continue to work hard to continue Christ’s ministry in our Franciscan tradition by providing the highest quality of health care to you and your family. Our employees, physicians and volunteers have been preparing for the upcoming move by participating in planning meetings, developing new care delivery procedures and implementing many changes prior to our move.
